First and foremost, I want to say that the title of this article comes from an opinion piece written by a Detroit Public Schools Graduate named Angelica Brown and everyone who knows me should know that I have been voting since my 18th birthday in 2003. So with that said, I thought this article was thought provoking and it excited me because Miss Brown went to a Detroit Public School and while she is doing an apprenticeship at the Detroit Free Press this summer, she was allowed to write such an articulate and well written article. Although I don't agree with what she said completely I have to give her credit for that at least.
I must admit I was shocked to see this article written by a fellow alumni of DPS because it makes me wonder what brand of politics she has been learning and reading about while she attended Mumford High School. I am not for either candidate but for me to say that Obama is not worthy of being President because he doesn't have enough experience or because he is black is just ridiculous. Also to say that because McCain is less of a extreme change than Obama and that's why Obama doesn't need to President is a shame as well.
While I applaud the author for speaking out, I must point that this election is not about race or age. It is not about who speaks well and who doesn't but it is about who has the best plan to solve the woes that America is suffering from today. It is about the actions of both candidates and with that said both candidates have flaws in their actions and have changed their positions over the last 18 months. Nonetheless, I want to make it plan and clear that such articles that talk about race and age undermines the character of both candidates and only keeps this country divided.
After years of divisive politics and particularly the last 8 years of extreme divisive politics, we do need a change in America and we need a change in the sense of how we do politics. We need a change in how we talk to each other, we need a change in how we campaign and how we keep everything about the American people. Both McCain and Obama offer something different than Bush and that is the willingness to listen but the true change that can occur in November is the change of the American people.
It is up to the us, as ordinary citizens to help change how America is looked at in the world and it is up to us to stop talking about ones race or age as a reason to vote or not vote for someone. It is up to us as Americans to unite behind whoever is President and hold them as well as all elected officials accountable. That's the change you can believe in and that's the change that is needed in America. A change in how we the American people hold our political officials accountable on how they vote and how they represent us on the local, state and federal level.
So one thing I will say to Angelica is that your view is thought provoking and I appreciate you taking such a stance for why you support McCain over Obama. However I strongly urge you to follow the issues and the actions of each candidate. That is what should motivate you to vote for a candidate. Not the issue of experience or age. Not the issue of less extreme of a change or more extreme of a change. Therefore keep up the good job you are doing in your writing skills Miss Angelica Brown but remember that when writing, you are using a powerful tool to educate the masses. So use this power wisely and carefully think about your words carefully.
