Many black voters are expected for the fall election and this could boost well for Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama. However while hundreds of thousands of new African Americans have been registered to vote this year so far. Some many are still unregistered and those are the ones that could ultimately give Obama and the Democratic Party the victory in some key battleground states such as Michigan. While blacks in the state of Michigan vote at a 57.4% rate, which is the highest among any particular state in America for African Americans. It is unclear will that turnout increase or decrease since Obama and the Democratic Party have not really tried to campaign in the neighborhoods were the real vote is necessarily.
Also the recent city of Detroit government problems with not only their Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick but with City Council as well could play heavy in determining whether Michigan is delivered Obama. Regardless of how any one feels about Kwame, he has been good about turning out the vote in the city of Detroit similar to how the late Great Coleman A. Young did for the city of Detroit when he was Detroit's first African American President. However since Obama has not tried to reach out to Kwame in his two trips to Michigan, it seems unlikely whether Kwame will mobilize enough Detroiters to go to the polls to put Obama over the top in the state.
Now Michigan is not the only swing state that could play a major role in the election of Obama but states such as Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and perhaps a couple of western states such as Colorado, New Mexico, and Neveda could swing his way as well. Now it is in the south where the Obama camp really plans to make major strides by taking a state such as Virginia or North Carolina where Obama is currently polling well. Now at the same time, if Obama and his camp can really dig into the issue of registering more of the large black population in the states of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi than perhaps the Obama campaign can pull off a major upset in true southern states.
In fact since Obama's clinching of the Democratic Presidential nomination, it seems as if that Obama and the Democratic Party have stopped working as hard they did were to register new voters. So this could come back to hurt the Obama campaign later on. At least from looking on, it seems that the Obama team has missed out on a valuable two months to really go into key battleground states with a mobilization force aimed toward registering new voters and winning southern states that the Republican Party have taken for granted such as Georgia, Florida, Alabama and North Carolina. The Democratic Party in all 50 states along with the Obama campaign should still be going out canvassing and doing everything they can to mobilize all types of voters to go to the polls in November.
If Obama wants to win the White House, he needs to continue what he did to get him the Democratic nomination in the first place and that is having a mobilization force that really knocked doors and sold Obama's message. With less than five months to go before the November election, it seems as if Obama is missing out on a very great opportunity to not only rewrite the electoral map but in fact break through huge barriers for the Democratic Party. Can you image just how special, it would be for Democrats to win back southern and western states that they usually never had a chance at in the past two Presidential elections.
That's why the African American vote in states such as Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi and Florida is extremely important. While I am not an Obama supporter right now, I want Obama to know that making two visits to the state of Michigan and one or two to Florida will not help you but you have to really get out there and knock the doors in all the major cities in both states. These cities with large black populations could really prove pivotal to you, Mr. Obama as you go forward. Also Georgia's large black population could really make Republicans spend more money in Georgia then they plan too and by mobilizing that base by knocking the every door in the Atlanta area and larger cities could force McCain and the Republican Party to focus heavily on Georgia when in fact you are trying to outspend them and work them in Michigan and Florida or a state like Colorado, Virginia or Alabama.
Seriously, Obama could rewrite the Electoral College map and could pave the way for the reemergence of the African American vote and the importance of the black vote by both the Democratic and Republican Parties. Thus in 2012, we could be talking about how the Presidential candidates plan to woe the black vote more so than the Hispanic, Evangelical, women, or working class vote.
