President Barack Obama held his first primetime news conference on Monday, February 9, 2009 @ 8p.m. eastern time where he took 13 questions in an hour. Majority of the questions primarily dealt with the economy and stimulus package but a couple of questions dealt with international affairs. Nonetheless President Barack Obama offered a glimpse into how many of his press conferences will go in terms of he will give long winded answers. However the reality is that giving long winded answers turns many people off.
Let’s be real honest and frank for a minute, the American people’s average attention span is about 30 seconds to a minute. Therefore as President Obama avoided answering many questions and tip-toed around others with his long winded answers, it was clear that many Americans forgot what the question was and were more impressed with what Obama said regardless if he was answering the question or not. President Obama handled himself very well during the news conference but at the same time, he left me wondering how the President of the United States of America can not remember what he and his Vice President discussed just three days ago.
President Obama was asked a question about some comments Vice President Joe Biden said about there’s a 30% chance it might fail and Biden said that it was in regards to a conversation President Obama and Biden had late last week. Therefore the reporter asking the question wanted to know was it in regards to the stimulus package having a 30% chance of failing. However President Obama got in front of the American people and said I don’t remember any such conversation and then went on to talk and talk about literally nothing. For many of you who don’t believe what I am saying can read the transcript and I think you will see that President Obama could have simply said no such conversation took place but instead he said he don’t remember any such conversation or what the conversation was about.
It makes me wonder about how transparent and honest is President Obama being with us the American people. Is President Obama playing on our emotions and intellect because I can remember the conversations I had with people two weeks ago once someone brings up what the conversation was about? However President Obama said he doesn’t remember any such conversation thus leaving me to believe that the conversation took place and Joe Biden and he came to the conclusion that there’s a 70% chance the quote unquote stimulus package will work and a 30% chance it won’t.
Then President Obama stood in front the American people told us to judge him on the 4 million jobs he either creates or keeps in America. Alright President Obama you are either being naïve in terms of the amount of jobs lost last year or you are playing on the American people’s intellect once again. So let me help you out President Obama, nearly 5 million people lost their jobs last year and at the same time, more jobs are continuously being shipped overseas without any word of how you are going to prevent that from happening. Therefore let’s just say the quote unquote stimulus package creates 2 million new jobs and keeps 2 million jobs in America. That means you only created 2 million jobs and you saved another 2 million Americans from losing theirs. So if we are to judge you on that that than you have failed us President Obama because 3 million people are still out of work because you only give 2 million out of the 5 million unemployed Americans a job.
However I know President Obama and his administration will say while 3 million Americans are still out of work, it could still be 5 million if we didn’t save the 2 million jobs that we saved. My scenario is a generous one but the truth is that President Obama and his administration don’t know how many jobs they will create through this quote unquote stimulus package and they don’t know how many jobs if any they will save. That’s why by throwing out numbers makes no sense at this point in time. President Obama would be best suited by saying I hope to create at least 2 million jobs and at most 4 million or more. However President Obama and his advisors want to be stubborn and they want to continue to throw numbers out there that the American people cling to as if they are the gossip.
President Barack Obama first primetime news conference was a shaky one that left me with doubts about what President Obama really thinks of us the American people. President Obama should be commended for trying to answer questions but at the same time President Obama needs to stop being long winded. In fact President Obama would be more suited if he was more concise, precise and direct in answering questions rather than the approach he used on Monday.
