Now all of a sudden that Senator Gregg is no longer seeking to the Secretary of Commerce, it seems as if the White House is back tracking saying that it doesn’t have the power to move the U.S. Census form the Department of Commerce without legislation being passed. However the White House is saying that President Obama is deeply concerned about the U.S. Census and its procedures so he wants to make sure it is done properly and effectively. But some people over the U.S. Census have said that President Obama’s involvement is a little bit too late because the planning for it has been in effect for years and the count is well under way as we speak. Therefore why is the White House all of a sudden doing a two step around the U.S. Census and the power move that they were preparing to do.
The U.S. Census Count and its accuracy is of great concern to many public interest groups and their multicultural members. The national census which is conducted every 10 years is the constitutionally required count of all people in the United States. Data from the census is used to determine the U.S. representatives from each state, draw the boundaries of congressional districts, and allocate hundreds of billions of dollars in federal grant money. Historically, the census has tended to undercount minorities, meaning that the regions in which they live tend to receive less representation in government and less federal funding.
That’s why the 2010 U.S. Census Count is of great importance because if it isn’t done correctly than the drawing of congressional districts could literally benefit one political party over the other. So the quote unquote power grab by the White House could politicize the census in a way that makes sure Republican districts are minimized and Democratic districts are maximized. In fact the politicizing of the U.S. Census Count will literally shift control of the U.S. House in one favor or the other if it isn’t done properly. The way the U.S. Census Count has been done in the past, has been in a way that is aimed at being as accurate as possible instead of sampling which is what many Democrats want.
If the U.S. Census is done in a sampling way than the Hispanic population, illegal immigrants’ population and other ethnic groups could be inaccurately counted meaning the sampling data could be more or less than what there actually is in this country. Therefore the politicizing of the U.S. Census is something that could have grave effects on the future of America and its political landscape. What the White House was or is preparing to do is something that could grow the Democratic control of Congress even larger while minimizing the Republican Party every step of the way. Think about it, if the U.S. Census Count gets in the hands of White House of Chief of Staff Robert Emmanuel who is known as a political shark and has been compared to the mafia in his tactics and style.
So with Emmanuel being in control of the U.S. Census, he could literally control the count that shifts congressional districts in a way that Republican districts are drawn into huge Democratic districts. At the same time, Emmanuel could re-draw Democratic districts in a way that splits them up further so Democrats can keep their current seats while taking over parts of Republican districts thus forcing Republicans to run against Democrats. Also Emmanuel could redraw districts that combine Republican districts forcing Republicans to run against each other. This is what politicizing the U.S. Census can do. All the talk about the U.S. Census being in the hands of the White House is scary. The Commerce Department has been in control of the U.S. Census this long and now all of a sudden the White House wants control of it and particularly the Chief of Staff of the President wants to control it.
Let’s be real, Robert Emmanuel a former Congressman and a Democratic leader on the House floor while a United States House of Representative member will be over the U.S. Census if the White House gains control of it. You would think that as White House Chief of Staff that Robert Emmanuel has enough on his plate already but clearly that is not the case. Emmanuel needs more on his plate and that is why putting him in control of the U.S. Census will round Emmanuel’s duties as Chief of Staff. Apparently that is the quote unquote alleged case that is rumored to being occurring.
With the Democrats in control of the House and the Senate, they could easily give President Obama and the White House the type of bill that they need to get control of the U.S. Census. Politicizing the U.S. Census Count could literally put control of America’s political system in one parties control for many years to come. This is what we are facing and this is what could be taking place. Has the way the Commerce Department has done the U.S. Census count over the last couple of centuries been bad? This is the question that neither members of the Congressional Black Caucus or the White House could explain.
In fact it wasn’t until President Barack Obama and his administration decided to nominate Republican U.S. Senator Judd Gregg as Commerce Secretary those rumors begin that the White House wanted control of the U.S. Census. In fact not only did the rumors begin that the White House wanted control of the U.S. Census but that White House Chief of Staff Robert Emmanuel would be over the Census. So ask yourself why the White House wanted to take control of the U.S. Census once a Republican was nominated as the Secretary of Commerce is still unknown. That’s why as President Obama and his administration prepares to nominate someone else as Secretary of Commerce, we will have to watch to see what the White House will do as it relates to the U.S. Census. Will President Obama and his administration continue to push for control of the U.S. Census Count once they nominate a new Secretary of Commerce?
Politicizing the U.S. Census Count is not good for the American people and changing the process from a supposedly unbiased department to a biased White House is clearly not fair or equal. No matter if many of you don’t want to believe it, the White House is Democratically controlled and so is its agenda. The White House is geared more toward the Democratic Party than the Republican Party. So how can anyone expect the White House to be fairer in the U.S. Census Count than a department that has been over it for centuries? A department that is supposed to be fair and equal no matter who controls the White House but the White House on the other hand will always favor one party over the other that is just how it has been over the years.
Politicizing the U.S. Census Count is not the right thing to do and it will create problems in the future that could hurt the American people’s way of life like never before. Sometimes politics should never enter certain areas and the U.S. Census Count is an area where politics should never enter into although its results have a major impact on the political landscape. The U.S. Census Count must remain neutral no matter who is in the White House and that is why the Department of Commerce must remain over it. The U.S. Census Count must remain neutral no matter who the next Secretary of Commerce is and the next Secretary of Commerce regardless if they are a Democrat or Republican can’t politicize the U.S. Count no matter what.
No Politicizing the U.S. Census Count! Not now, not tomorrow, not ever!
