Sheriff Warren Evans Is Detroit’s Best Choice for Mayor

If public safety is the key to rebuilding Detroit than Detroit’s next mayor needs to not only be competent enough to understand how to make public safety effective throughout the city but must have expertise in the field of public safety. Detroit’s next mayor needs to know how to manage as well as fight for the important jobs within the city while at the same time is willing to make the tough decisions when necessary in terms of laying people off but only as a last resort to balancing a budget or saving the city money.

That little bit of criteria alone makes Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans the best choice to be the next mayor of the City of Detroit. However Sheriff Evans is more than just experienced in the field of public safety but he is an attorney and a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar as well as a former criminal justice instructor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Wayne County Community College District. Sheriff Evans knowledge of not only public safety but the law makes him a unique candidate because he understands how to use the law to enact good public safety policies that will benefit all aspects of the city.

Sheriff Evans knows how to manage and oversee a budget as well employees which he has been doing since 2003. His ability to work with unions to save employees jobs and his ability to keep the Wayne County Sheriff budget manageable as well as resourceful is impeccable. In fact when Wayne County was talking about laying off Wayne County officers, Sheriff Evans fought to make sure his officers kept their job and he sued Wayne County Executive Robert Fianco over the issue of layoffs for Wayne County officers because he believed that other measures could have been taken besides laying people off in times when the economy is dreary. Sheriff Evans ability to stick up for the little man in a time when everyone is usually looking out for themselves is commendable.

However Sheriff Evans has always been a fighter for the people. Before the City of Highland Park received its own police force back, Sheriff Evans made sure some of his finest officers continued to be stationed in the City of Highland Park. Therefore helping to keep Highland Park law town where its major crimes such as robbery, larceny, etc. dropped and more minor crime violations in the form of speeding and parking tickets were reported higher than ever from 2004-2006. While the at the same time car accidents were reduced by 50% during the same period.

Sherriff Evans is a fighter for our youth as because it was Sheriff Evans in 2006 who lobbied to merge Detroit Public Safety for Detroit Public Schools with the Wayne County Sheriff Department because he knew that our youth would not be protected properly while in school by the management of Detroit Public Safety. However many School Board members and radio talk show hosts such as Mildred Gaddis said that the idea of the Wayne County Sheriff Department being in Detroit Public Schools would be intimidating to the students and would only add more chaos to the current school structure than is needed. Flash forward to the Fall 2008 Detroit Public School year and you can see where Detroit Public Safety has reached out to the Wayne County Sheriff Department for help in the wake of string of youth violence in the form of school shootings and robberies at various schools throughout the school district.

Since that time, the spurt of school violence has decreased but there is still more work to do because the emergence of gangs inside of Detroit Public Schools and throughout the city has been at an all time high since Gang Squad was dismantled for a long period of time. However while Gang Squad is back, it has not be the same and with Sheriff Evans expertise as a police officer and correctional officer makes him knowledgeable of how to strategically place officers particularly Gang Squad effectively throughout the city of Detroit during the dismal times of many Detroit Public Schools. Plus Sheriff Warren Evans experience as the former Head of the Wayne County Department of Community Justice will help him develop a strong community policing program aimed at strengthening Detroit’s neighborhoods through public safety.

Detroit needs not only someone who has integrity, honesty, respectability and accountability but it needs the right leadership to go along with all those things, which is what Sheriff Warren Evans brings to the job. Sheriff Warren Evans is not running for Mayor to have a job but he is running because he loves the City of Detroit and wants to restore it to its “Greatness” again. Sheriff Evans is strong enough to know how to deal with the labor unions when it comes to contracts with the city and the unions perhaps giving back concessions in order to keep the city afloat. Sheriff Evans does not believe in the pay to play game but believes that everyone deserves a fair shot at the Mayoral table regardless of who you are.

The City of Detroit needs someone who can work with regions throughout the state in order to get things accomplished that will not hinder the City of Detroit but will increase the city’s power throughout the city. Detroit needs someone who will protect the city’s assets and will work to put the brightest most talented minds in the right positions in order to not only keep the city afloat but make sure it strives again. Sheriff Warren Evans is the best choice to be Detroit’s next mayor because he is approachable as well as willing to listen to the issues plaguing each corridor of the city while at the same time striving to bring solutions to the nagging issues.

With Sheriff Warren Evans W.E. can generate jobs through focusing on public safety and a business development strategy that will attract more businesses within the city as well as strengthening our small business community! With Sheriff Evans W.E. can build safer neighborhoods through a public safety initiative aimed at placing officers on the streets more with more walking the beat type strategies as well as opening up more community police precincts in order to cut down on emergency response times throughout the city. With Sheriff Evans W.E. can build stronger communities throughout the city by making officers more accessible to community leaders, residents, community leaders, businesses, religious leaders, and religious groups in order make sure all stakeholders within the City of Detroit are held accountability in protecting our streets.

With Sheriff Warren Evans W.E. can turn around our schools by making sure our youth are safe in-school and out but most of all making sure that all residents of Detroit step up to mentor our youth when we see their parents are not capable of doing it along. With Sheriff Evans W.E. can turn around schools but revamping DPS academic curriculum and finding solutions to DPS budget problems without the State of Michigan appointing a Financial Manager that will detect to us how we spend our money. With Sheriff Evans W.E. can turn around our schools by coming up with short term and long term mandates that need to be met in order to reshape Detroit Public Schools and make it a world class school district like it once was considered.

Sheriff Warren Evans has been identifying and then fixing problems in our community for 35 years which is why he is the right leader to bring Detroit out of the shadows of shame and into its rightful glory as a world class city again.
