Obama/William Weld: AP (staff written) “Former Mass. Gov. William Weld to endorse Obama”: Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican, is endorsing Democrat Barack Obama for president, citing the senator's steady leadership, good judgment and ability to unify Democrats, Republicans and independents. "Senator Obama is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America's standing in the world," Weld said in a statement released Friday. "We need a president who will lead based on our common values and Senator Obama demonstrates an ability to unite and inspire." Throughout this campaign I've watched his steady leadership through trying times and I'm confident he is the best candidate to move our country forward," Weld said. LINK
REAGAN APPOINTEE & RECENT McCAIN ADVISOR CHARLES FRIED ENDORSED SEN. OBAMA TODAY
Obama/Republican Endorsements: The New Republic- The Plank (Cass Sunstein) “Reagan Appointee and (Recent) McCain Adviser Charles Fried Supports Obama”: Charles Fried, a professor at Harvard Law School, has long been one of the most important conservative thinkers in the United States. Under President Reagan, he served, with great distinction, as Solicitor General of the United States. LINK
Obama/Republican Endorsements: Politico – Ben Smith: The Fried endorsement”: As a reader points out, the drip drip drip of prominent Republicans moving to Obama feels a little like the superdelegate flow in the last days of the primary. The latest: Charles Fried, the Reagan official and Harvard professor, asks to be taken off McCain's list of advisors and backs Obama. The move was broken (somehow, of course) by Cass Sunstein at the New Republic, who writes that Fried cited as a reason "the choice of Sarah Palin at a time of deep national crisis." He's a big deal in conservative legal circles, though also a harsh Bush critic on some constitutional issues. LINK
FORMER BUSH PRESS SECRETARY ENDORSED SEN. OBAMA
Obama/McClellan Endorsement: AP (David Bauder) “Former Bush press secretary backs Obama”: Scott McClellan, President Bush's former press secretary who angered old colleagues with a tell-all book earlier this year, said Thursday he is backing Barack Obama for president. McClellan is the second former administration official to back the Democratic candidate this week. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell came out Sunday for Obama. While Powell chose "Meet the Press" to make his news, McClellan did it at the taping of comedian D.L. Hughley's new talk show, which is premiering 10 p.m. Saturday on CNN. Hughley found a little begging helped. "We are a new show and your endorsement would probably mean a lot," Hughley said. "But don't look at the fact that I am black or, no pressure. Endorse somebody, damn it!" LINK
LONDON MAYOR ENDORSED SEN. OBAMA
Obama/London Mayor Endorsement: Politico – Ben Smith “Boris for Obama”: The colorful, Conservative London Mayor, Boris Johnson, comes out for Obama: There are all sorts of reasons for hoping that Barack Hussein Obama will be the next president of the United States. He seems highly intelligent. He has an air of courtesy and sincerity. Unlike the current occupant of the White House, he has no difficulty in orally extemporising a series of grammatical English sentences, each containing a main verb. Unlike his opponent, he visibly incarnates change and hope, at a time when America desperately needs both. Also, he expresses a real conservative hope for Obama: That his Nixon-to-China move will be shifting affirmative action away from race: If Barack Hussein Obama is successful next month, then we could even see the beginning of the end of race-based politics, with all the grievance-culture and special interest groups and political correctness that come with it. REPUBLICAN ENDORSEMENTS
Obama/Republican Endorsements: Wall Street Journal-Washington Wire (Susan Davis) “Obamacans: Prominent Republicans Line-Up Behind Obama”: Since Colin Powell crossed party lines to endorse Barack Obama last Sunday, a steady stream of prominent Republicans have endorsed the Illinois senator over rival John McCain. Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld is endorsing Obama today at a press conference in Salem, N.H. Weld was a public supporter of Mitt Romney in the Republican primaries. In a statement, Weld called Obama a “once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America’s standing in the world.” LINK
