However, universal health care only partially deals with the issue of good health because while having health insurance is one step toward good health. It does not address the entire issue of good health head on because it only provides people with medical visits and the opportunity to perhaps get medicine that they probably otherwise couldn't get in the first place. Therefore the real question is if we had universal health care right now, would we be healthier or would we have coverage for our premature and most times preventable illnesses? Health care is the hottest topic to date but universal health care only addresses one part of the health crisis in America. The second part of the health crisis is personal responsibility in terms of health. We need for the discussion of universal health care to expand to universal health responsibility in terms of our diets and lifestyle choices.
We have to make better choices in our daily lives in terms of what we eat and consume on a daily basis. We have to not only have universal health care but we need for our doctors to advise on wisely on what to consume so that we can stay healthy and live longer. We as people need to take universal health responsibility in our daily routine by taking better care of ourselves. It all starts with eating right which means eating more healthy foods and exercising more. When I asked a couple of people about universal health care or universal health responsibility. One person who shall remain nameless told me that they feel like its wrong for people to get rich off of others being sick but they do believe that people should eat healthy and exercise. They went on to say that maybe if there was a way to have universal health care for people that meet certain criterion than they thought it would be an incentive to be responsible. Nonetheless that would only just make the universal health care issue even more difficult because some people are born with problems.
Then another individual feels the issue with universal health care or universal health responsibility is a matter of cost. In fact the one that they like about meeting a health quota is that if you are a relatively healthy person, you will never a quota of e.g. $300 (if insured). You may spend $175 a year, but that is a cost most people would pay for check ups, written prescriptions, etc. The burden is on the individual to be healthy and in case of catastrophe, the coverage would kick in, quickly. On the flip side of that, many people need basic health care, preventive medicine, etc...They went on to say that they should be guaranteed through special programs , while emergency medicine should be as well. The middle ground is where the gray area is hard to decipher.
Overall the issue of universal health care is one that is not real simple but one must agree is that it is needed. Along with universal health care we need universal health responsibility in order to keep ourselves healthy. We can't have one without the other and that is the real issue that needs to be addressed right along with more of a debate about affordable universal health care.
