Monday, December 1, 2008 was a very important day to me but not all. It was World AIDS Day and while Starbucks Coffee celebrated the day by giving a part of their proceeds to AIDS research as well as giving people red cups instead of the white cups people usually get from Starbucks. World AIDS Day was not talked about by many of my friends and many people on facebook but it is a very important day that that needs to be recognized just as much as any holiday that we as a people celebrate. I’m not saying that World AIDS day needs to be celebrated but more attention needs to be devoted to AIDS than it is. This is a disease that is destroying some many lives in the world. AIDS is a disease that is claiming so many lives and it is a disease that so many people in this world live with and don’t even know it because they don’t get tested.
That’s why World AIDS Day and the fight against AIDS are so important to me. I don’t know how AIDS started but this is a world epidemic like no other. It is a disease that virtually plagues all races, all ages and both genders. AIDS is a world emergency that needs to be wiped out but to fight this disease we as a people have to first start getting tested. While having a World AIDS Day is nice, it doesn't mean anything if many of us in this world can’t afford to get tested yet alone we are not actually getting tested as often as we should.
Having a World AIDS Day means nothing if we as a people are not taking advantage of the hundreds of thousands of free HIV/AIDS screening that are being offered by so many organizations throughout the world. World AIDS Day is only a symbolic gesture because in order to really fight AIDS we need to make sure that people who are being promiscuous are actually getting tested before and after many of their promiscuous adventures. We are killing each other people. It’s like that old saying, “guns don’t kill people, but stupid people kill people.” Well when it comes to AIDS, we need to start saying that AIDS don’t kill people but weak minded people who choose to have adventures sex or unprotected sex kill people. Simply put, people who choose not to get tested kill people and those who probably know they have AIDS kill people because they don’t want to be the only person with it.
Yes some people in this world, who are walking around with AIDS, know they have it but they want to pass it along to others because they feel like this is a gift from God that should be shared with others. This is sad to say but I am just giving it to us as a people as real as I can. World AIDS Day was like an afterthought for so many of us this past Monday and the sad part is that in 2002, 5 million people were newly affected with the disease HIV in the world. Also in 2002, 42 million people in the world were living with HIV/AIDS in terms of those who reported it. Now just imagine how bad it is now. In 2008 to date, nearly 8 million people have been newly affected with HIV and nearly 60 million people in this world have HIV/AIDS with another 4-8 million cases still not reported according to White House reports and the United Nations World Health Organization documents.
AIDS is a disease that is destroying families because so many mothers in Africa are being diagnosed with HIV while they are pregnant. Therefore 1 in every 4 children in Africa, whose mothers have HIV, are born carrying the HIV gene according to African Union 2006 health report. That’s why when World AIDS Day, I was excited to see who else cared about this world epidemic and to my amazement it was still a few people who cared besides myself but it fall short of the type of excitement and care that should be felt worldwide. While many of us probably wore red ribbons or red in recognition of World AIDS Day that was not enough to really address this issue the way it should be addressed. AIDS is an issue that needs to be discussed 24/7 because this disease kills too many lives and it’s the little things that could combat this disease.
While so much money is spent toward research and technology to combat this disease as well as to find a future cure. More time needs to be devoted to educating and providing education because our people are not aware of how AIDS can be prevented as well as the importance of having protective sex on top of getting tested as often as one has promiscuous adventures. The reality is that so many lives can be saved if people would only get tested but before they even get tested, people need to use protection.
World AIDS Day was like an afterthought to so many of us just like so many us participate in promiscuous adventures and those are afterthoughts to us. One night it was oh so good until we wake up a couple of days later or a couple of weeks later and realize we are either pregnant or worse we have HIV or AIDS. That’s why we need to make sure we get tested as well as make sure we use protection. We can prevent so many of these cases of HIV and AIDs by simply using protection when we participate in promiscuous adventures.
For my males, I don’t care how much a girl tells you that she wants to feel you inside her raw. You need to tell her that the only way anything raw is going inside her is that vibrator she has at the side of her bed because you believe in protection. It’s safer for both you and her.
My females, I don’t care how much a guy tells you he loves you or how beautiful & fine you are that it would be a shame for him not to hit it raw. You need to tell him that if he wants to put his thing in something raw than get a cube steak, they come raw. Ladies, you got to tell these dudes that the only way you have sex is with protection and it’s nothing wrong with even putting it on for him or better yet having a condom in your purse for when dudes say I don’t have one. We can’t fight the funk people; they make condoms for both men and women so let’s start using them.
We can’t be fools any longer because too many of us know of someone who is walking around with the disease and if we don’t know of anyone than that’s because they are afraid to get tested or better yet, they are a shamed to tell anyone. Having AIDS is embarrassing to some people but we as a society need to let it be known that the only embarrassment when it comes to AIDS is not fighting to cure it or not finding out you got it in the early stages. That’s the real embarrassment, not finding out you have it and not fighting it once you know you have it as well as being an advocate to fight the disease and educate others on how to prevent this from happening to them. That’s the only embarrassment to me.
World AIDS Day might have been an afterthought for so many of us but I hope this shines more light on this epidemic and encourages more people to get involved in this battle. We can’t allow this disease to continue to destroy so many good lives. AIDS is a scary disease because no disease has been created to cure it. While there are some cures to certain forms of HIV, it doesn’t work on all people who have it. While cancer plagues so many lives just like AIDS. There are so many more survivors when it comes to the various cancers than it when it comes to AIDS.
That’s why World AIDS Day can no longer be taken in vain. That’s why we must talk to one another about the importance of getting tested for HIV/AIDS every couple of months or as often as we have promiscuous adventures. We can’t allow millions of more people to be newly affected by this disease in 2009. We have to tell our friends, our family members and even complete strangers about the importance of strapping it up and being protected when indulging in promiscuous activities. We can’t allow any more new cases to happen in 2009. In fact, we should be spending 2009 finding out who does have HIV/AIDS and bringing that to the attention of our statistics rather than finding out that actual new people were affected.
World AIDS Day needs to more than just an afterthought but it should be one of our thoughts on a weekly basis. We must fight until we can’t fight anymore. We can’t allow AIDS to plague our world. It is a world epidemic and all nations need to declare it as that.
