Thanksgiving is a time for us to reflect on our blessings that have come and those that will come to us because how much we have given to help others as well as how much other people have given to help us. It’s sad that for many of us we only talk about how thankful we are during Thanksgiving when all of us should be thankful each and every day that we wake up. That’s why as we look toward the new year, we need think beyond the superficial things and we need to think about just how blessed we really are as a people.
Let me try to some of this into perspective for many of us. Each and every day there are nearly 3 out 10 Americans walking around with some form of cancer or HIV/AIDS. Also every 48 hours in America, there is at least someone shot by a gun and every 10 minutes someone in America dies. Therefore we are thankful more than we ever know people. The reality is that we should be thankful for more than just living people but we should be thankful for the people we have in our lives because so many people don’t have friends and family to spend the holidays with.
So many Americans’ don’t even have a roof over their heads yet alone clean clothes to wear on a daily basis. There are so many things we as a people need to be thankful for on a daily basis. No matter how bad anybody thinks their life is, it could be worse so be thankful that it isn’t. Why complain about our life people when someone else is fighting just to save their life. There is so much for us to be thankful and there are so many things that we as a people take for granted. We can no longer afford to take these things for granted people.
We are blessed more than we can ever imagine. I know many of us have wondered how do the rich do it or how do the poor do it but the reality is that we need to start looking at our lives in order to realize that rich and poor is not monetary. Rich is what you consider it. I’m rich for having two (2) parents, six (6) siblings (5 living), six (6) nieces, and nine (9) nephews as well as hundreds of thousands of friends, associates and acquaintances that any person can have. I’m rich because my B.L.A.C.K. brothers, my Fraternity Brothers as well as my Fraternity Sisters, and the millions of alumni that I am affiliated with from Tennessee State University and John J. Pershing High School.
We cannot continue to take our blessings for granted people. We cannot continue to equate rich with money when so many people who wish they could have a kid can’t have one and so many people who wish they had siblings don’t have one. We can’t continue to take so many little things for granted because those are the things we should be thankful for. We have to understand that we should be thankful 24/7 no matter what. We have to realize that we should always give from the heart no matter what and never give because you are expecting something in return.
Blessings come to those who give from the heart and never expect anything in return. We must give because that is in our nature not because we think we will be rewarded for giving. That’s why blessings come to people when people least expect it and that’s why it is called a blessing. A blessing is something that happens without us not knowing when it will happen but we expect it to happen because we know Lord blesses those who wait patiently.
No matter how you look at your life, we need to understand that thanksgiving is not a just holiday but it is every day. So be gracious for what you have. Don’t think about what you don’t have but be thankful for what you do have and for those you have in your life. Be thankful for today, be thankful for yesterday and be thankful for every waking second, minute and hour of each and every day that you allowed to participate it.
Celebrate your life each and every day and don’t take any moment within your life for granted. Everything happens for a reason and no matter the reason, be thankful for the memories that you have been allowed to garner up while you have been living.
BE THANKFUL EACH AND EVERY DAY YOU OPEN YOUR EYES!
