Canvassing with Harold Ford Jr.


If I told you once and I told you twice, Harold Ford Jr. knows how to throw a good old event. At 9am in the morning, students started arriving on the campus of Tennessee State University. To my amazement, I was shocked to see students from Fisk University and Tennessee State University rise up so early on a Saturday morning to help in such a just cause such as voter outreach and education in the community. The students which consisted of all females and one male was organized in a progressive yet motivating style that uplifted many of the students spirits in terms of why they are up and out so early on Saturday morning when they can be sleeping.

As State Representative Brenda Gilmore spoke to the students about why they should support Harold Ford Jr. and his campaign as well as her campaign and Governor Bredesen's campaign, it was truly amazing to see the students glance in amazement and eat up every word of support and courage. I was astonished to hear the cheers and applause as one by one, speakers came and spoke to energize the youth before they went out and canvassed the communities around Tennessee State University. While many students were tired at first as they embarked on their journeys, they quickly woke up as they walked door to door in the TSU and Fisk community. Students knocked on doors rallying supporters and getting others registered to vote while giving out Harold Ford Jr. literature to prospective voters.

Who says the youth of America aren't interested in advocacy such as voter registration and elections cause the youth at Fisk and TSU are truly politically aware of the times and issues. If you are not involved in the political process than how can you complain about it. So get involved is what I said and truly Harold Ford Jr. has shown these college students that the only way to better education, cheaper fuel or other oil alternatives and improving educational institutions in Tennessee is to have the right people in office who will fight for the citizens of Tennessee and not for the big businesses of Tennessee. Tennessee needs a new leader and they need a NEW GENERATION LEADERSHIP and HAROLD FORD JR. is going to deliver that.

It's been a long time coming but a change is surely going to come in America and the World! We must not believe the hype but we must become the hype. We are not Harriett Tubman, Marcus Garvey, MLK, Malcolm X, Booker T. Washington, Carter G. Woodson, W.E.B. DuBois, the Black Panther Party, SNCC, or any other activists but we are the fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, uncles, aunties, and relatives of those who came before us to pave the way for us to FIGHT THE POWER! We are not next Generation of leaders who will not be honored and praised until they die but that’s the fight we accept. We are not fighting the power for glory or fame but we are fighting the power for just causes that most men and women will not understand until years or decades later.


We are fighting for our sisters and brothers in Darfur, Georgia, Iraq, Iran, China and Mexico. We are speaking for those who are poor and have no food or water. We are fighting for those who are sick and dying. We are fighting for universal healthcare across the world and human rights for all people. We are fighting for rich and poor! We must FIGHT THE POWER no matter how hard and tough the road may be. We must FIGHT THE POWER for a better today and an even greater tomorrow!
