"I've heard people say John Edwards loves Iowa," Edwards told 200 liberal activists Saturday. "Well, people in New Hampshire are about to see that John Edwards loves New Hampshire."
Most polls show Edwards leading in Iowa, but in second or third place in New Hampshire, behind Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Edwards drew plenty of support in New Hampshire in 2004. He ultimately lost to John Kerry, but his strong showing in New Hampshire and elsewhere led Kerry to pick him as his running mate.
Edwards, who has already visited the first-in-the-nation primary state more than any other Democratic candidate since December, is the first to return to New Hampshire since a televised debate last Sunday.
The former North Carolina senator touted his plans for universal health care, alternative energy and college tuition assistance, and pledged to end the war in Iraq.
He said he is the only candidate who would mandate health care for all Americans. His plan would require employers to provide coverage or pay into a government fund to support insurance, and allow workers to choose among plans.
He challenged his rivals to debate him on health care, saying their proposals still would leave many Americans without access to coverage.
"If it's not mandated, it's not universal," he told 200 liberal activists at DemocracyFest.
To combat rising gasoline prices, Edwards said the Justice Department should investigate the big oil companies for possible price-gouging. In the long term, the country needs to rid itself of its dependence on oil and develop cleaner, affordable energy alternatives, he said.
"Our addiction to oil is strangling America," he said.
He also promised to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 80 percent by 2050 and raise fuel economy standards for cars to 40 miles a gallon by 2016......
