Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's State of the City address Tuesday night struck the perfect chord for Detroiters.
The predominantly black population of Detroit still holds an unhealthy distrust of many white leaders. When Gov. John Engler said the city's schools were a disaster and ordered mayoral control with state oversight, howls of protest resulted.
Now that Kilpatrick has laid out the city's problems and some solutions, including charter schools, we may have a starting point for reversing the trend that sees half or more of Detroit's students dropping out before they graduate from high school.
This development is a recipe for failure in life, and yet the message has not gotten through. A stronger police presence in schools to discourage a lawless atmosphere will aid teachers in educating youngsters.
In addition, Kilpatrick's endorsement of charters and promotion of specialty nursing schools will give parents and students more school and career development options..............
