Former U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. said Tuesday that he has “no plans” to run again for the U.S. Senate in 2008 against Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.
Ford, appearing at a Gov. Phil Bredesen event, said he is concentrating on his new teaching job at Vanderbilt University as well as “some other things” that he’ll announce in the coming weeks.
“I’m just finishing my congressional term,” Ford said. “I hadn’t been out two weeks and you’re already asking me about another race. I just accepted an opportunity at Vanderbilt. I’m very excited about that. I’m doing some other things that I’ll announce in the coming weeks.
“The last thing on my mind is that, but I have no plans.”
The additional “things” that Ford referenced could be his being named as chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), a Washington D.C.-based think tank for moderate Democrats.
Ford is expected to be named the new chairman, but he didn’t have a direct comment about that Tuesday, saying he’d be “happy” to discuss it in the coming weeks.
If Ford becomes DLC chairman, he would replace Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, who is running for president. Former President Bill Clinton was also a DLC chairman....
